Transforming Women's Water Burdens Into Economic Opportunities

The Global Women’s Water Initiative (GWWI) is a program of Women's Earth Alliance, in partnership with Crabgrass. GWWI is building a cadre of women trainers versed in a holistic set of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) strategies capable of building various appropriate technologies, promoting water-related health campaigns and launching social enterprises. GWWI partners with local women leaders to design trainings for grassroots women and groups to bring sustainable WASH solutions that improve their communities' health and self-reliance.

GWWI has facilitated training programs for 45 2-person teams of African Grassroots women leaders providing over $75,000 in seed funding for women-led water and sanitation programs in 9 countries in Africa - Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Liberia, South Africa and Cameroon. The teams are selected through a rigorous application process: the selected duos are all respected leaders who have a proven track record in implementing programs in their local communities. To date, the projects launched by GWWI graduates have led to over 30,000 people accessing improved access to clean water and/or sanitation.
