Erni SP Profile

Region

South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Affiliations & Roles

Founder, Balang Institute

Program Coordinator, Jurnal Celebes South Sulawesi

Erni SP is a graduate of the Master of Agriculture program at Hasanuddin University. For almost ten years, she has worked on social forestry issues with institutions such as the Indonesian Communication Forum on Community Forestry, the Center for International Forestry Research, and the Indonesian Forum for the Environment in South Sulawesi. When the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry initiated a social forestry program in 2009, Erni began collaborating with national and international institutions and universities to fight for forest sustainability and the surrounding communities. She was anxious about the conflicts between customary communities in and around her village and the local government because of the policies that led to massive forest degradation. In 2010, Erni established her own NGO focusing on social forestry issues called the BALANG Institute, located in Bantaeng Regency, South Sulawesi.

Erni is currently working as the Program Coordinator for the Celebes South Sulawesi Journal. The journal Celebes is an environmental journalism NGO that runs environmental programs such as strengthening independent forestry monitoring networks to ensure timber legality verification systems, eradicating illegal logging, reducing forest destruction, and increasing the livelihoods of Indigenous people. As a Program Manager and community facilitator, Erni has been involved from the start with program planning, funder coordination, program management, and reports on community organizing, training programs, and workshops. She is also actively involved with mentoring the community around the forest, contributing ideas to reduce conflict between the village and the government.

Erni also advocates for gender justice in forest conservation efforts. She always tries to ensure that women have equal opportunities to access nature, participate in social forestry projects, and receive the positive impacts of these programs. In the coming years, Erni aims to increase community awareness and welfare and reduce illegal logging by getting the timber industry to obey Indonesia's national timber legality assurance system. She plans to do so by circulating more information online and in print about forest conservation, timber trade and circulation, and good practices in forest conservation, as well as increasing local capacity by training the local communities on independent forest monitoring.
