Protecting the Siam crocodile through field research and education

Suimah is a researcher and conservationist who is currently chairman of the Ulin Foundation. The Ulin Foundation strives for successful, collaborative conservation management of threatened species outside of protected areas in Indonesia. They carry out programs that include restoring natural habitats through “rewilding,” designing and managing permanent conservation areas, collaborating with the community to carry out science-based professional and educational opportunities, and building partnerships.

Suimah studied Forestry at Mulawarman University, from which she graduated in 2004. She was the best conservation cadre of East Kalimantan in 2005. Since 2009, Suimah has been managing 8,000 hectares of habitat for the Siam Crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) in Mesangat, East Kalimantan. Working in collaboration with other NGOs, Suimah builds extracurricular environmental curriculum from her research conducted in 3 sub-districts around the Mesangat swamp. She is also active in the water resources management team in the Karangan River area of East Kalimantan.

Suimah hopes to reach and inspire more university students in Indonesia to do field research, especially related to the Siam Crocodile. She intends to slow sedimentation in the swamps through habitat management and monitoring, as well as expand her conservation efforts to other species. She plans to do so in part by developing a strategic framework for the Ulin Foundation to amplify their impact.
