Rubama is a community advocate from Aceh, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. She works to engage the women of her community in an effort to protect the natural resources of the region. As an organizer, she is deeply passionate about establishing ecological justice based on gender-equality in her community.
After her region was ravaged by a tsunami in 2004, she developed a community-based waste management program in her village. Since 2006, she has been working in grassroots development programs that empower women leaders in villages working to protect the natural resources in Aceh. She trains women how to create handicrafts, grow produce, and upcycle, while also involving children from Nusa Village in the Waste Bank Program.
Rubama is currently managing the Community Based Tourism strategy in Nusa village, in the Aceh Besar district. She also serves as a program officer for HAkA, an Aceh-based NGO working to restore the forest and protect the overall environment in Aceh and is helping to restore a forest in the Bener Meriah district with a grassroots women’s organization that manages forest conservation for ecological justice in Aceh. She was the Program Coordinator in Aceh for Women’s Solidarity for Human Rights.
In 2017, Rubama obtained the Perempuan Inspiratif Perintis Kemandirian Desa Award and in 2013, won the Indonesian Inspiring Women award.
