Campaigning against the impact of extractive industries on Indonesian rivers.

Adolfina Kuum is an environmental activist in Mimika, who campaigns for the interests and demands of the people who are severely affected by PT Freeport Indonesia’s tailings. Several accidents and victims of Viber/Loangboath Boat have occurred at the mouth of Sungai Sampan, Puriri Island, and Kampung Pasir Hitam, while community members were heading to the sea. These accidents resulted from the silting of river channels and sea transportation routes due to tailings, which is a residual material produced in the separation of concentrate from ore at mine processing plants. As chairman of Lepemawi (Mimika Far East Environmental Care Community Care Institute), Adolfina has been an advocate and voiced the needs and aspirations of the affected community. Since 2013, Adolfina has communicated the demands of the community to the company and the government to immediately open a new port, rehabilitate environmental damage, provide community compensation, and provide a ferry to pass through the sea.

In addition to community advocacy and mediation, Adolfina has also carried out many organizational activities, such as publicizing the hazards of Freeport waste, assisting accident victims in sea and river transportation, and conducting research and documentation. Going forward, Adolfina intends to involve the public with these problems through documentaries and national seminars, as well as build shelters for the affected communities. She works to spread awareness of extractive industries at the regional and national levels and build capacity for her initiative through support and donations.
