Who CAREs? Earth Day 2021 Event: Meet Crystal Cavalier-Keck and Desireé Shelley Flores
The Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) is a proposed 303-mile pipeline from West Virginia to Virginia that is intended to carry fracked gas from the Appalachian Basin , and the proposed he Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) Southgate Extension would continue an additional 70 miles from Chatham, Virginia into central North Carolina so that the gas can eventually meet up with other lines and be exported to overseas markets. MVP has faced violations from the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act, including hundreds of water quality violations cited by Virginia and West Virginia. The Roanoke river is one of the water sources endangered and it is the drinking water source of more than 700 thousand people. Indigenous rights have also been violated and the integrity of their land is continually threatened as bulldozers plow through ancient burial mounds and other Sacred Sites.
Crystal Cavalier-Keck (Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation) and Desirée Shelley Flores (Monacan) are working together to advocate for BIPOC communities being affected by the MVP pipeline and prevent the Southgate Extension from happening.
As part of WEA and Sierra Club’s Earth Day 2021 Event, Who CAREs? A Conversation on Feminist Climate Action, Crystal and Desirée will share updates from the frontlines as they raise awareness about Indigenous sacred sites and natural resources being threatened by the MVP. Learn about the complexity of this work, the collective actions they are organizing, and how you can get involved.
