We are what we need: Raihal's Story

Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem, crucial for carbon storage and biodiversity, faces severe threats from deforestation and extractive industries, endangering global climate stability and local Indigenous communities. Amid these challenges, Raihal Fajri has emerged as a leader in community-driven action and resilience.

Raihal’s journey began in 2004 when a tsunami contaminated her village’s water source near a concrete mine. Determined to protect her people, she led a campaign that closed the mine, sparking her lifelong commitment to protecting communities and the environment. Through WEA’s 2019 Indonesia Grassroots Accelerator, Raihal gained the skills, tools, and networks of support she needed to scale her reach and impact, and spent the next three years growing a movement of women’s groups advocating for climate resiliency throughout the Leuser region.

Today, Raihal and fellow WEA Leader Leoni Rahmawati are co-leading the 2024 WEA Advocacy and Entrepreneurship Accelerator, equipping 120 Indigenous women across the Leuser region with the skills and resources to push for urgently needed forest conservation policies and Indigenous land rights. This initiative is creating sustainable economic opportunities for a dozen communities and strengthening community-led environmental stewardship, reaching up to 400,000 people.
