Over six weeks this summer, seven WEA programs and the communities carrying them were affected by environmental emergencies. As we listened to what partners, friends, and colleagues were experiencing, one question kept surfacing: What makes a community able to respond when the systems people depend on begin to fail?

Safe water, reliable food systems, healthy land, functioning roads, and resources that can move quickly are all essential. So is the infrastructure we cannot always see: the relationships, knowledge, and trust that allow people to recognize what is happening and act together.

Women leaders are central to that infrastructure. They are organizing, sharing knowledge, protecting land and water, and helping communities respond. Their leadership is a steady presence long before a crisis reaches the headlines, and it remains as communities recover and build greater resilience for the future.

Our Fall WEAvings newsletter shares what this leadership looks like in practice:

• In India, Indonesia, Hawaiʻi, and Alaska, WEA Leaders and local partners are identifying urgent needs and moving food, safe water, medicine, equipment, and other resources to communities affected by floods, earthquakes, wildfires, and severe storms.
• Across Mexico, WEA and Las Cañadas have launched the Mexico Grassroots Accelerator: Women and Land(opens in new tab), a two-year program for teams of women leading collective land projects.
• In Central Java, girls and young women are combining local knowledge with new skills through the EcoPeace Sisters Climate Field School(opens in new tab), developing community-based environmental solutions that can also strengthen livelihoods.
• In Assam, longtime WEA Program Lead Purva Bharati Educational Trust received the 2026 Indigenous Women’s Leadership Award(opens in new tab) for Girls for Goals, an initiative connecting football, education, and leadership for Adivasi girls and girls from tea garden worker communities.

Together, these stories offer hope that comes from seeing the proof. A more stable future is already being built through the choices communities make every day: what they protect, whom they trust, and what they create together.
