Kakamega, Kenya

Restore Kenya's last tropical rainforest

Kakamega, Kenya

Nestled along the eastern edge of the Congo Basin forests, the Kakamega tropical rainforest is the last of its kind in Kenya. Yet, despite being home to critical habitats and rare species found nowhere else in the world, the rainforest has been under attack for decades.

Originally around 23,000 hectares, intensive logging, clear-cutting and human pressures have decreased the forest area by more than half its size. In the last 20 years alone, Kakamega has lost 123 hectares of primary forest (that’s the size of 229 football fields!)

Your gift today will become a seed grant that will enable women leaders to establish tree nurseries where they will grow indigenous trees to restore the rainforest. (Each sapling will sequester 100 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere in their first year of life! In 20 years time their growth will exponentially contribute to the restoration of this vital rainforest!)

Already over 34,000 trees have been planted, reforesting 24 hectares of the Kakamega Forest. With your help, the women protecting this forest will reach their goal of growing another 100,000 trees.

Piauí, Brazil

Protect Brazil's mangrove carbon sink

Piauí, Brazil

The Atlantic coastline of Piauí, Brazil is a place of breathtaking natural beauty, home to the Delta do Parnaíba with its sacred mangroves and diverse ecosystems.

But this stunning and fragile environment, and the tropics as a whole, will be hit particularly hard by climate change—already, communities in Piauí are facing rising sea levels, soil salinization, increased temperatures, water scarcity, and more. And the impacts caused by the continued loss of their mangrove forests—one of Brazil’s largest mangrove carbon sinks—will be felt across the world.

As mothers, farmers, healers, entrepreneurs, water collectors and fisherwomen, the women of Piauí are uniquely positioned to be the guardians of their communities and the environment. Together with Brazilian NGO, Filha do Sol, we are creating a strong women-led climate coalition—the first of its kind in the region—dedicated to protecting the tropics and working on climate adaptation strategies.

Your gift today will become a seed grant to help the women leaders of Piauí restore the mangroves of the Delta do Parnaíba. With your support, we can create lasting change for their communities, the Tropics, and the world.

Regenerate our food and health systems

United States and U.S. Territories

Throughout time and across cultures, women have played a critical role in producing our world's food, medicines, and health systems, while protecting ecological knowledge key to our survival and stewarding our natural resources.

As a global community, we are at a crossroads. Feeding our growing population and sustaining the natural resources we depend on will require a shift toward regenerative, life-giving agriculture and stewardship. As key players in global food security and sovereignty, and as the primary caregivers to families and communities, women are the link between our lands and our families.

Your gift today will support WEA’s upcoming Regenerative Agriculture and Health Accelerator, becoming a seed grant to a leader like Johanie Rivera-Zayas—a soil health researcher in Hawai'i promoting rural community economic vitality through agriculture.

Johanie's passion is supporting farmers, ranchers, and foresters in the Pacific and Puerto Rico to increase climate resilience and farm viability by improving soil health and climate-smart practices. By supporting her, you’ll be supporting land stewards in Island territories who are tending our lands, farming cultures, and food systems to ensure sustainable ecosystems for future generations.
