“I am one but I’m not alone” — Reflecting on our time in Brazil

Our hearts are full as we write to you, having just returned from an incredible trip to Piauí, Brazil. We are thrilled to announce the launch of a powerful partnership between Women's Earth Alliance (WEA) and Filha do Sol, a women-led Brazilian NGO.

Piauí is a region of breathtaking natural beauty, home to the Delta do Parnaíba with its lush mangroves and diverse ecosystems. However, this stunning and fragile environment is under threat from climate change. As mothers, artisans, farmers, healers, entrepreneurs, water collectors and fisherwomen, the women of Piauí are uniquely positioned to be the guardians of their communities and the environment. By supporting these women, we can create lasting change for their communities, the Tropics, and the world.

As a densely populated semi-arid region, climate change will hit Piauí and the tropics of the Brazilian northeast particularly hard—already, communities are facing rising sea levels, soil salinization, increased temperatures, water scarcity, and other environmental challenges. By protecting the tropics and working on climate adaptation strategies, we can help reduce this loss and damage, as well as the potential for climate-induced migration and its associated social and economic consequences.

Our partnership with Filha do Sol will create a strong women-led climate coalition—the first of its kind in the region—dedicated to restoring the mangroves of the Delta do Parnaíba. This area is vital to the well-being of local communities and the planet, as it supports the livelihoods of thousands of people and is one of the largest mangrove carbon sinks in the country. Our collaborative efforts will not only enhance climate adaptation but also promote the well-being and resilience of the people living in this critical region. Check out a short reel from our trip below!

Our partnership with Filha do Sol marks a new chapter in our journey to support women as agents of change in the critical work to address the climate crisis.

We look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks!
